Houston, TX (April 10, 2020) — A five-car accident on I-45 North Friday morning left two people dead and three injured. The accident happened on I-45 at Rankin Road around 1:30 a.m.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Anthony Alvarado was towing a black trailer with his red SUV south on the freeway when he got a flat tire. As he was exiting the freeway, a gray Mazda 3 crashed into his trailer and flipped sideways onto the freeway.
Police say that another driver, 29-year-old Tyler Vail, tried to avoid the crash. However, he lost control of his Chevy Silverado, crashed into the wall, and came to a stop in the freeway. A passerby, 23-year-old Abdullah Baidas, stopped to help the passengers and drivers.
As Baidas approached the accident site, an Amazon 18-wheeler, driven by 56-year-old Cody Munson, swerved to avoid the crash. Unfortunately, he hit the vehicles and two people standing on the road.
The two victims, the male driver of the Mazda 3 and the female passenger of the red SUV, became pinned under the 18-wheeler. They died at the scene.
Two children inside of the red SUV, who were under four years old, suffered minor injuries. First responders transported them to the hospital. Authorities believe the female victim was their mother.
Baidas jumped off of the freeway to avoid the crashing 18-wheeler. He fell 15 feet and suffered some injuries, but is expected to recover.
Police are still investigating the accident. They don’t believe any of the drivers were impaired.
