New Orleans, LA (April 28, 2020) — A woman is now recovering from her injuries at home after her car fell into the middle of Lake Pontchartrain when she was rear-ended by another vehicle Monday afternoon. The crash happened in the northbound lanes of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
According to Causeway Police, 25-year-old Nakia Stonom was driving north on the bridge in her Hyundai Elantra when she realized she forgot something from her work and needed to go back. She then tried to pull into crossover #4 in the left lane and was hit by the pickup truck behind her. Her car then hit a guardrail and flipped several times before landing the water.
Stonom escaped from her car by exiting her open window and suffered only minor injuries. Causeway patrol officers Shane Gaeta and Dareale Sopsher, along with a few bystanders, rescued Stonom from the lake. She is currently recovering from the accident at home.
According to Causeway officials, the guardrail that Stonom hit is from the 70s and the section of the bridge she was on has not received new ones as part of a $100 million safety improvement project.
Causeway Police are still investigating the cause of the accident. So far, no charges have been filed in the crash.
