New Orleans, LA (2/20/2020) — A woman died Wednesday night after being run over by a float during the Krewe of Nyx parade in New Orleans. The accident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. at the intersection of Magazine and Valence Street with Float 21.
According to the New Orleans Police Department, Geraldine Carmouche, 58, was at the Krewe of Nyx parade supporting two family members who were participants when she tried to cross between two parts of a tandem float. She tripped over a hitch connecting the two and was run over. Carmouche died at the scene of the accident.
The incident happened during the parade of the Mystic Krewe of Nyx, which is an all-female carnival group. The city decided to end the parade early and diverted subsequent floats off of the parade route.
Police are still investigating the accident. An impromptu memorial was set up Thursday morning at a corner near the site of the incident.
