St. Bernard Parish, LA (April 10, 2020) – An explosion at a Valero refinery near New Orleans left at least one person injured early Friday morning. The accident occurred around 12:45 a.m. at Valero’s oil plant in St. Bernard Parish at 2235 Jacob Drive.

According to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, a pressure relief valve blew up, causing a blue flash explosion. The St. Bernard Parish Fire Department had the fire contained by 3:00 a.m. and the injured worker was taken to the hospital. No information about the worker’s identity or injuries has been released.

The DEQ sent an official to take air quality measurements at the site of the accident to see if there were any chemical emissions. The results of that test have not been released and Valero has seven days to give the DEQ a report on the company’s internal investigation into the incident.
