Somerville, TX (May 11, 2020) The Somerville community is mourning after four people were killed in a crash this past Saturday night. The accident happened around 11:00 p.m. on LBJ Drive.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 37-year-old Ignacio Aviles was driving south on LBJ Drive when he hit a guardrail and ran into another vehicle driving north head-on.

All four of the occupants of the other vehicle died at the scene of the crash. The victims were identified as 18-year-old Chase Sowders, 18-year-old Jasmine Maxwell, 6-year-old Payton Francis, and 37-year-old Justin Richard. Aviles suffered critical injuries and was rushed to CHI St. Joseph Health in Bryan.

When the accident was reported, it didn’t take long for the community to hear about it. Since Somerville is such a small town, almost everybody knows each other. Justin Bellis, a friend of the families who lost loved ones in the accident, said that “within hours it probably went through the whole community.”

Lauren Brewster, a close friend of Jasmine Maxwell, said that the community has taken action to support the families of the victims. “There’s GoFundMes. There’s prayers going out. There’s people gathering together to make sure the families [are] good,” says Brewster.

Investigators have not stated whether alcohol or speed were factors in the crash. So far, no charges have been filed against Aviles.
