Axtell, TX (May 9, 2020) — Students, friends, and family are mourning the loss of an Axtell High School baseball coach after a single-vehicle crash on Thursday night. The accident occurred in Huckabay, Texas after the coach was visiting friends.

The Axtell Independent School District announced the passing of 31-year-old Cameron Bankston on their Facebook page. Axtell ISD Superintendent J.R. Proctor said that Bankston “came to Axtell just a single year ago, and had already made an unmistakable impact on our school.”

Bankston was also a former teacher and head baseball coach at Hamilton High School from 2015 to 2018. He was also a baseball player at Abilene Christian University and a player and coach for the Dallas Tigers Baseball Club.

Students of Bankston gathered on Saturday at the Axtell baseball field to talk about how their coach affected their lives.

Police have not released any information about the cause of the crash.
